There’s a sense of fulfillment when we reach our goals, right? Oh the joy to say, “I’ve done it!”, “I’ve changed for the better!”, “I’ve accomplished my goals!”
Here’s something that the Lord impressed in my heart for the past week that I would like to share with you all:
I have been studying the book of Proverbs for quite some time now and for these past weeks, the Lord has been reminding me about speaking graciously, choosing the right words to speak, about discipline with my mouth and temper.
I am 200% sure the Lord is telling me something by continually reminding me of these things, I KNOW IN MY HEART I NEEDED TO HEAR IT… NOT JUST ONCE BUT COUNTLESS TIMES! You see, I have this continuous struggle with words since… I don’t even remember when. There are times when I go to bed victorious but there are also those times when I go to bed frustrated because I lost the battle…again.
So here are three things that I am going to apply to help me win this battle. I can’t tell you the results just yet because I’m just starting with this new battle plan. So here you go:
- Practice the “Count 1-10 before speaking”
I just realized that because I speak fast and immediately after hearing a matter, I tend to neglect thinking about it first and that may be one of the reasons why I burst out often.
Proverbs 15:28 says “The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.”
Proverbs 29: 11 says “A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.”
James 1:19 says “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”
As I am writing these verses down, my heart breaks even more knowing that there are several verses in the Bible talking about speaking righteously and here’s a 14 year old Christian who can’t even apply it. Oh well, I think the next point of my battle plan will definitely be the answer.
- Spend more time praying
Although, this may sound cliché to you, I believe this is my greatest weapon against uncontrolled temper and ungracious speaking. I pray, yes! But I believe that in order to win this war, I need to double up my praying schedule. A continuous fellowship with the Lord will remind me to be on guard always. My plan is to spend 30 minutes in the morning , 1 hour before going to bed and short prayers all throughout the day.
- Have an accountability partner
I can’t do it on my own! I need the Lord’s guidance and wisdom to be victorious. And, He has given me loved ones who care for my testimony. It will definitely be helpful to have someone to remind me “Ooops Sof, you’re not controlling your temper again!” or “Sof, what you said was inappropriate”. For me, it’s Amos! I really admire His skills in speaking and His patience towards me. :s The Lord has blessed me with a great man, a man I don’t deserve! God is good!
There you go, my 3-point battle plan against uncontrolled temper and ungracious words. I know the Lord spoke about these matters in His Word because it has been a struggle for many people.
*PS. I want to take this time to apologize if I have hurt you through my words, I am really sorry. 😦
I hope you can get something out of this! I would like to hear from you, send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org . Let’s update each other on how our battle plan goes. 🙂
